artistic vision

We have recently clarified our current artistic vision to exclusively support the creation of original works. We have devised three catagories of creation that we have chosen to engage in and support:

Creative collaboration (drama foundry pojects facilitated by David MacMurray Smith, author of Creative Collaboration: A Very Rare Beast a Transmissions article from 1999)

Technical collaboration (individual productions of original Vancouver based theatre work, starring and developed by local artists under the direction of one or a small group of individuals)

Solo creation (support for writer/performer combinations at all levels of their creative process)

Our current areas of focus include:

Looking at the 21st century North American understanding of mental health issues, and;

Using storytelling to explore the relationships between new forms of media/entertainment and theatre.

mandate

1 To create and develop relationships within the local theatre community by creating opportunities for emerging artists to work, create and learn together.

2 To produce work that is relevant to and explores the lives concerns and artistic expression of local emerging artists.

3 To provide audiences with an intellectually enlightened and challenging theatre experience.

4 To promote, encourage and foster the publics attention to and appreciation of local emereging artists and their work.

5 To create and develop an artistic community based on providing opportunities to emerging artists, while fostering invidual styles and approaches.

6 To connect with the existing artistic community, both amateur and professional, in order to foster a cross pollination that will strengthen and enhance  both.

7 To be fiscally responsible; to firmly set all activities of the Society on a business footing, with due care and attention to business planning, balanced budgeting, expense control, and audit and verification procedures, so as to ensure that all funds entrusted to the Society, are utilized responsibly in line with the purposes of the Society as set out in clauses 1 through 6 above.

company history

Enlightenment Theatre Society was conceived and incorporated in July 2006 by the father-son duo David Wayne Brown and David Benedict Brown. Our funding base (to date) has relied entirely on donations from the private sector; we do not wish to remove ourselves from the private sector, but seek to expand and include public sector funding.

2006

In December, Enlightenment Theatre produced Collage: An Homage to Kurt Schwitters. Collage was a look into the 'global village as a collage', the action of the play took place vicariously through the life and times of the 20th century collage artist Kurt Schwitters. Written by Ian Kluge, professor of theology and son to a Nazi Judge and Holocaust survivor, Collage was dramaturged and directed by Enlightenment Theatre Artistic Director David Benedict Brown and associate artist Ashley Rutherford.

2007

In June, Enlightenment Theatre produced an original play written by UBC creative writing student Andrey Summers entitled Lovestruck: A Romantic Comedy Set in the Horrific World of H.P. Lovecraft. It was directed by Gord Myren (BFA, UBC theatre) at the Dorothy Somerset Theatre on UBC Campus.

In July, Enlightenment Theatre produced the George F. Walker play, Zastrozzi: the Master of Discipline directed by Emilio Salituro (BFA, UBC theatre). This was Enlightenment Theatre's first large scale production of an already written/produced play as an experiment in 'show business', and the first to engage professional organizations including the GVPTA and CAEA. For this project Enlightenment Theatre received a media sponsorship package from CTV news.

2008

In July, Enlightenment Theatre submitted an original solo piece in the 10x10 theatre festival presented by ITSAZOO Productions. The piece was entitled One Point Five Days of His Life, it was a candid look at the life of a 'white collar workers' exploring the ups and downs of an anxiety disorder. The piece was the first in a series of plays written by Artistic Director David Benedict Brown exploring mental health issues, and was directed by Evelyn Chew (graduate of Studio 58)

In September, Enlightenment Theatre brought One Point Five Days of His Life to San Francisco, California for the Dark Room Theatre's Working for the Weakened: Work related theatre festival.

2009

Currently Enlightenment Theatre Society's Artistic Producer David Benedict Brown is presenting a one man show at the 2009 Toronto Fringe festival. The play, entitled: Michael in Primetime is a look at the development of psychotic delusions spawned by early childhood trauma. Inspired by residents of the downtown eastside, this piece explores themes of mental decay associated and catalyzed by childhood trauma and drug abuse. The piece is written by David with assistance from Nicolle Natrass (CAEA and PGC) and is directed by Evelyn Chew (graduate of Studio 58).

Currently, she may be seen going through a trash bin in your neighborhood - she's not really a bum though, she just has a deep appreciation for great art.

David Wayne Brown

A commercial real estate banker with a zen for theatre, David spent several years on the Board of Directors for Bard on the Beach. He takes pleasure in continuing along the path to enlightenment after founding this company with his son. The company's aim is to assist emerging artists while providing communal "enlightenment." The company's name is derived from the European Enlightenment of the 1700's.
